I was doing an oracle reading for a client the other day, when something super awkward came out of my mouth.
“It’s the journey, not the destination….” I clapped a hand over my mouth in horror, and then continued, “I am SO sorry, that was an awful thing to say, let me talk you through it!!”
Because…ugh, what a cliche. I swear it wasn’t me, it was the cards tapping in to source and the universe loves a joke.
But here’s the thing…that cliche is actually SO TRUE.
If you can’t find a way to be content and happy “in the journey” of your life, aka in the day-to-day of working on whatever you’re trying to achieve…not only will you spend a bunch of time not having the best time, or missing out on your life as it happens…you won’t even “get” to your “destination” anyway.
Because there ISN’T REALLY A DESTINATION, as I explained to my client.
Say you have a “goal” to be in your ideal relationship or partnership, and you think “once I get there, then I’ll be happy, loved, safe, content, and life will be so much better.”
All of those things sound great, and I have no doubt that you’ll enjoy them when they are happening for you.
Except…all of those things, and life in general, is more like a continuum than any single-pointed destination.
Let’s try on another cliche, “the only constant is change.”
Think about an amazing, happy, memorable moment in your life.
Not to belittle it at all but…how long did that happiness actually last? How long was that “moment”?
Probably not very long, and then other things started happening, you had new goals or events in your sights and life moved on.
That’s what I really meant by “it’s the journey not the destination.”
Once we’d talked through it a little bit, what finally came out was “the journey IS the destination.”
Your “goal” whatever it may be, is actually better spent trying to feel the things you want to feel at the “destination” now…and now…and now…and now. Etc.
I’ll pose the same question to you I left my client with: if you treated right now, aka “the journey” as if it were the “destination” what would you do differently right now?
Instead of waiting for some far off day to feel how you want to feel after you’ve accomplished whatever…try bringing that energy into your life right now, and see how things shift!
